That's a real laser folks. The ESO's Very Large Telescope (VLT) shoots a laser 90km into the sky aimed at the exact center of the Milky Way Galaxy where there is a black hole. There are 4 identical VLT's (see three below) that use the laser point to re-calibrate focus which enables the massive lenses to see even further.

I feel like I'm on Mars.

We are literally in the driest place on Earth. Right now it's the end of winter so it's not boiling hot, but it is insanely dry and the day and night temperatures are extreme, but mild for the region. 70's during the day, 30's when the earth rotates away from the sun. Not to mention we are at altitude. I keep trying to compare this place to somewhere else but all I can think of is photos from the Mars Rover. There is ZERO life here. No plants, no birds, no snakes, no bugs under rocks. NOTHING.

The crew flew North 700 miles from the capitol city of Santiago to Chile's second biggest city, Antofagasta. For the entire flight, the Andes were out to the right side and the Pacific Ocean out the left. It was trance-like, I kept pinching myself. I think the mountain sticking up is Aconcagua, the tallest mountain in the Western Hemisphere, at 22,841 feet.

Once the sun falls behind the mountains, the spring day turns back into a winter night. Time to bundle up.

It was magical flying low over the Andes at dawn. First a deep blue streak high across the sky and then a vibrant orange that silhouetted the mountains out of the deep darkness of a 10 hour red eye flight from Atlanta. Santiago was 25 degrees out when we stepped off the plane and by 2PM it was 75. Chile fumigates all checked luggage for bugs so don't check your pillow!

We were on top of Enclosure around 9 AM after leaving the high camp
(see below) just after 4:30 the same morning. In the scramble to head
out in the dark to make the saddle by day break, John could not find
his headlamp. No headlamp, no assent on the mountain. We rigged a
maglite to his helmet with duct tape and the rest is history.

In the wee hours of an icy precipitous day in Brooklyn, the sun stood idle behind a think sea of cloud cover that created a deep diffusion, allowing hardly any light to permeate through the frozen waterfall in the sky. In the mask of darkness and reveal of powder blanket, everything disappeared. As the earth continued on with its turn-and-twist, the light prevailed. We slowly moved towards the door with laced boots and hit the covered walks and thoroughfares.

Three alligators in Alligator Bayou East of Baton Rouge, LA.

Urban sprawl in Baton Rouge is threatening the future of these prehistoric reptiles and their swamp. New residential development--planned communities-- have been spreading like wild fire surrounding the wetland area post-Katrina and already new residents are calling for the swamp to be drained. The alligators will have no where to go and will be rounded up and most likely shot. The politics are tricky and go way back, it looks like the alligators will loose their swamp.

It is a shame that state and federal lawmakers/ regulators do not see what is at stake here. Ecologically, the food chain is disrupted with untold consequences and the once delicate ecosystem is scarred permanently until long after the extinction of humans. Just look at the Lower 9th Ward, vegetation regains the neighborhood block after block deeper and thinker every single day.

It would take a serious private investor to stand up first and foot the bill for proper legal protection of the swamp. It's a cantaloupe for President Obama, too. Real change would be the reversal of fortune for southern Louisiana. Not to mention the tons of agro-waste sent from the mid-west and the miles of chemical refineries lining the Mississippi River-- the life source of that entire region-- no body is doing a damn thing to stop it.

Dead Zones, Superfund Sites , toxic Northerlies; the list of horror goes on and yet nothing towards actual turn around. It's sad.

It would not be weird to walk in on Lindsay holding a video camera decked out as an alien from Pluto or a robot from the future in her living room. Lindsay has an ability to present human emotion as something beyond social constructs and stereotypes. Her visual sequences tempt viewers to pre-judge and then take that feeling and hold the viewer hostage with their own emotions. (That's how I felt... It was powerful.)

I'll admit that I was slow to warm up to President-Elect Obama. I wasn't convinced of who he was or what he had done, but considering the options, I was willing to hear him out. After listening to him for 2 years and looking at my own situation, it's become clear Mr. Obama is going to make my life better. Seeing I don't make much and have no benefits, I can now rely on tax credits and free health care to expand my self employment. Seriously, thank Godbama.

I'm not sure how it will all work, but I'll be waiting for that check. How long do these things typically take?

I like to walk really fast. When I'm trucking down a long block I'll scope out targets up ahead of me and set goals for where and when I'll pass them. It keeps things interesting.

"Casually intense," as I would put it, is how I attack the hussle and bustle. And you really have to attack. The word "casually" could be replaced with smoothly, but it doesn't really matter. If you always push your pace, if you are the pace setter, then when it really counts, you'll almost always be in the lead. That sounds really cheesy... but I'm ok with that.

You gotta love getting up before the sun. Out the door as first light cracks onto the street backlighting thin clouds overhead. It's cold, but you're prepaired, the air can't hurt you, just enjoy.

NEWS- I read in Time Out New York recently that there is a method to eleminating garlic breath while still eating garlic. Basically, cut the garlic in half vertically and you will see a tiny green stem running down the middle. Use your knife and flick it out. That's it. The green stem inside the garlic accounts for the stank. That's amazing!

In other news, Yellow Cab's now have GPS mapping in the back for customers. It's nice.

My First Pad in New York City (Upstairs) 14 Steuben St. Brooklyn, NY

When I moved out to New York I had no idea what my living situation was going to be. I came out here solo so knew I was looking at finding roommates; in a city of 15 million, the task seemed daunting. Nontheless, in a short matter of time I was walking my stuff up the stairs into a two story warehouse across the street from the Brooklyn Naval Yard on the Fort Greene side. I had found a guy who ran his own high end photo print lab and was looking for somone to fill one of the "side lofts" in the space.

The Brooklyn neighborhood of Clinton Hill is not too far from Steuben, just a nice stroll beneath the BQE and a block up Grand St. and whalla!...Myrtle Ave. Grocrey Stores, Unisex Salons, Jewish Deli's and enough bodegas to keep everyone and their monther stocked with beer blunts and lotto tickets.

Athens County, Ohio

It's different out in the sticks. The roads are tighter to the wheel and the flow of traffic is like a needle in the 'ol haystack. The nearest interstate is 90 miles away, the nearest state route is 23, nearest county road, 10.

All is well in rural Athens.

Julie is four months along with their child. They support eachother equally, each the others crutch, as Julie stands at the end of their drive while Mike fixes the mailbox.
